The are an incredible number

The are an incredible number of variations in spelling of the core Scottish name Neish many of which people have used in letters to me to this day! Neisch is one of them although most variations only exist before the name was standardised some linger on. Early registrars in the case of relatively uncommon name would write it as they thought it was sounded. This spelling occured in the northern portion of Scotland. I can tell you from personal experience that people still want to add the "c" into my version.

The name Nish is the same and should be sounded the same as Neish ( not like fish). This spelling would indicate the family originated in the southwest of Scotland as this became the standardised spelling in this area.
