Neish

Margaret Neish (nee Watson) Locket

I received an email from from a jeweler in possession of a locket dedicated to Margaret Neish.

The full inscription is as follows:

Wife of William Neish
Of Tannadyce Forfarshire
Only daughter of George Watson Esq "RE"
Of Calcutta and Aberdeen
And His Wife Catherine Anne Cock
Born at Calcutta
15th. January 1819
Died at Tannadyce House 13th. November 1882
Deeply Loved and Lamented.

The jeweler would love to sell this to someone who is a direct descendant of the family mentioned (unfortunately I am not!)

Please use the contact form and I will pass on the details.

Holidays in Scotland

If you are a Neish, then you must go and visit your ancestral homeland in Scotland. If you live there already, then you will know what I am talking about. I went to Scotland for a visit back in 2001.

Neish Island

Neish Island and Loch Earn

For Neishes, the most obvious site to see is Neish Island. Yes, I admit it is fairly small, but you still feel some sense of pride that once apon a time a long time ago, your relatives were outlaws and lived out on the island to avoid capture. Neish Island is on Loch Earn and driving around this area is was a real higlight of our trip to Scotland. As well as Neish Island, there is also accomodation available in Neish house. When you have an unusual surname like this its amazing to come across it twice in one day! We didn't stay at Neish house because at the time there was a minimum booking of a week and we didn't have that long.

Fairies stop developers' bulldozers in their tracks

Developers are having a hard time in St Fillans on Loch Earn, anscestral home of the Neishes. Ancient stories and legends are preventing developer from having their way in this part of Scotland. In particular, moving ancient stones is said to bring bad luck and might even kill the fairies.

This article (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1881612,00.html#) has the details and even mentions the Neish legend.

Descendents of Peter Neish

The attached file is a tree of the descendants of my my great great great great grandfather Peter Neish (born 1811). See also the genealogy images on which much of this tree was based.

About the Neish Name

The name Neish goes back to Scotland and has some interesting history associated with it - especially the conflicts with Clan McNab. I visited this region in 2001 and it is a wonderful part of the world. It was great visiting Loch Earn and seeing Neish Island.

Loch Earn (from Perthshire website www.perthshire.co.uk)

I've always read that Neish is a sept of the Clan MacGregor, but there is another opinion says that it comes under McInnes.
